SIR HENRY COOPER/ MIKE REID CHARITY CLASSIC MAY 2007 The second round of the Sir Henry Cooper Mike Reid Charity Golf Classic was held at Boavista Golf Resort on Thursday 17th May. This year this popular annual event was raising funds for the Comedians Golfing Society, the Mary Hare Primary School and the British Heart Foundation. For this year’s competition the organisers had arranged for a car to be the prize for a hole-in-one at Boavista’s 14th hole and if that wasn’t enough, there was also a golf buggy up for grabs for anyone who completed the same feat at the 11th. Leaders from round one, which had been played at Palmares Golf Club on May 14th were MI 1 on 85 points with celebrity Sion Tudor-Owen who led home last year’s winning team. 2BM (Martin Herdman) and Penina (Robert Pugh) were joint second at that stage on 83 points. It was a benign day by Boavista standards which should have made scoring easier, but as is often the case some the leaders struggled to maintain the standard they had set and recorded a disappointing 73. 2BM took full advantage of the situation bettering their first day score by 1 point and hit the top of the leader board with 167 points. Urban Golf, with celloist celebrity David Yelland, pushed themselves into second spot on 165 with Complete Clean 1 (Dave Jessup) in third on 163. The title of unluckiest player at Boavista definitely went to comedian Dave Wolfe who saw his tee shot at the par 3 14th hit the pin only to stay out. Bad enough to miss out on a hole-in-one on any occasion, but this time, had the ball dropped, Dave would now be the proud owner of a brand new Saab SportWagon. At the end of play, Phillip Pope Boavista Resort’s Managing Director, formally welcomed Sir Henry and Mike before presenting them with a cheque for £10,000 towards the charity. All of the players and their guests then gathered at the Boavista club house for a barbeque with entertainment provided by the Algarve’s own Vitor Telhados with a little “help” from several of the celebrities. Day 3 at Penina produced some real drama. 2BM found it tough going in the heat as other teams also fell away, but the Sony Walkman team with former darts world champion John Lowe chose their moment to record 89 points, the highest score of the week, and finish on 246 points to place them as early leaders in the club house. This meant that 2BM needed 80 points to retain the lead and take the title which made for a nail –biting finish. They did it, JUST, with nothing left to spare on the last securing first place on 247 points. In third place a good way back on 238 points was Dave Yelland with the Urban Golf team. Special mention must be made of Dave Jessup in the celebrity’s individual competition. He led the way from day one winning for the third year running finishing a massive 14 points ahead of second placed celebrity Clive Russell. And all that off a handicap of 3! |
